What is Bring Your Own Carrier (BYOC)? And how does it work ?

What is bring your own carrier

Bring Your Own Carrier (BYOC) is the process of bringing or choosing a carrier to plug into an existing phone system. It is a possibility for companies to choose what carrier to add to their existing UCaaS or CCaaS.

By choosing BYOC – companies can bring their own carrier / SIP trunking provider and add it as part of their communication setup; that will provide them a complete communication platform. Technical advances in telecom and cloud communications have made it easier and cost-effective to make this move.

The essence of BYOC is based on SIP trunking which enables you to modernize or replace your current phone system. SIP trunking makes it possible to make IP-based phone calls instead of classic phone lines. SIP trunks can serve multiple phone calls at a time, and most of the new phone systems already have the built-in SIP trunking.

The steps to transfer from traditional phone system to BYOC virtual system include:

  • Adopting UCaaS that possesses a lot of features, or
  • Providing SIP trunks, without having the customer migrate to a UCaaS solution.
  • Transfer to a cloud platform, and then to BYOC

How can BYOC benefit your business?

BYOC

As companies try to make the transition into the cloud, they can experience different situations where a BYOC might be useful. For example, some companies get stuck in multi-year contracts with carriers that it is hard to leave behind. Also, the companies may operate in different regions and sometimes they’re enforced to a particular carrier due to the regulatory issues.

The cases mentioned above have induced the possibility for Bring Your Own Carrier. Companies can now choose a solution with their own carrier, and the benefits of bringing your own carrier are multiple:

  • Flexible and easy transition to the cloud.
  • Option to scale — up or down, as needed.
  • Less service interruptions that may be compliance-related.
  • Getting control over call routing and forwarding.
  • Reducing communication-related costs with low SIP trunking price.
  • Keeping existing phone numbers through number porting.
  • Increased global coverage.

The decision to move to a SIP provider that satisfies your calling needs will provide you with uninterrupted, high-quality service. Thus, you will avoid being stuck with a carrier that doesn’t match your needs.

Bring Your Own Carrier approach will provide you better control
over your transition into the cloud. Some companies are
hesitating about their communication strategy, not being ready
to move to cloud, or with particular technology. Adopting your
own carrier means that you can maintain all the benefits and
discounts that you’re now getting from your telephony provider.

When and who should use BYOC?

UCaaS, CpaaS and CCaaS solutions can bring multiple benefits if they are set up properly. For smaller companies, a full-stack solution provides a direct way to move to the cloud, which brings better support and simplicity from the communication provider. Larger companies with their diverse demands, can largely benefit by adopting the BYOC.

BYOC can bring you advantages in the following situations:

  • You need to keep your existing numbers and carriers when you’ll decide to move to cloud environment.
  • You want to use a single global provider, or multiple providers, depending on your needs.
  • As you scale, you want to keep the preferred pricing of a company that shows loyalty to its existing SIP provider.
  • You need control of your call routing and services for compliance and regulatory reasons, and you can also extend your coverage to multiple markets

BYOC for your UCaaS, CPaaS, and Contact Center

BYOC allows the companies to choose the desired carrier in their UCaaS, CPaaS, and SaaS environments. This implies that UCaaS providers like Microsoft Teams, will no longer define which carriers their clients use to enable dialing within their cloud platforms.

Also, BYOC enables:

  • Single cloud-based solution for all modes (UCaaS, CPaaS, C.C.) without own equipment. That will simplify the admin tasks, and ease the management of user accounts.
  • Making local and global phone calls via partner carriers, enabling you to completely replace PSTN, with affordable pricing schemes.
  • Smooth integration with other platforms such as MS Teams, so your contact center will reduce its costs and can operate in a multi-vendor environment.

There are already CRM SaaS providers like Freshdesk, HubSpot, Zendesk and Zoho that integrate calling into their Web applications, while relying on CPaaS (e.g. Twilio) – to facilitate call APIs between their platforms and the PSTN world.

Saicom.io has integrated into Twilio for BYOC/BYON, making the choice to use Saicom for call origination and termination a seamless one. Also, Uber has integrated dialing functionality into its app to enable drivers to call riders without needing to know their personal numbers.

BYOC for Twilio

Twilio BYOC is a cloud-based solution that enables you to use Twilio voice calling by using your existing PSTN number, i.e. your current carrier. By keeping your current phone numbers – Twilio can enrich your calls with its programmable voice features. In order to use BYOC trunking – your carrier must be able to send and receive SIP traffic to Twilio. BYOC will let you keep your voice connectivity and unlock multiple Twilio features, such as API-s, messaging (SMS), video features etc.

BYOC for Microsoft Teams

To make local and global phone calls – some companies use Microsoft Teams calling system. Sometimes, due to the huge traffic – the voice quality is degraded, and the service may face interruptions. Here the usage of BYOC can largely improve the call quality. Its so-called direct routing will allow you to use third-party call services into Microsoft Teams, and retain all existing Teams collaboration features.

A Bring Your Own Carrier solution in MS Teams will also benefit the users by making local and global calls from the Teams app (cost-effectively). Users will be able to move to the cloud, and keep the plan with their preferred telecom provider. In addition to the phone calls – users will be enriched with all Teams features – collaboration, messaging, video meetings, captions, transcriptions, cloud storage etc.
